The Stall Plates of the Knights of the Order of the Garter 1348-1485

Heraldic Media was originally formed to reproduce works of an heraldic and genealogical nature in a digital form. For the last few years we have been heavily involved in the development of Cracroft's Peerage and so have not been able to develop the digital reproduction side of the business. Consequently it is very satisfying us to have at last published our first digital reproduction, The Stall Plates of the Knights of the Order of the Garter 1348-1485.

When a person is invested with the Order of Garter he or she is allocated one of the stalls or seats that form part of the wooden screen surrounding the quire of St George's Chapel, Windsor. To mark temporary "ownership" of the stall his or her banner and crested helmet is erected on the wooden screen over the stall. As a more permanent memorial to the Knights and Ladies of the Order of the Garter who have sat in a particular stall an enamelled brass plaque of the arms of the Knight or Lady is affixed to the screen panelling behind the stall. Over the centuries these brass plaques, called stall plates, have come to form a totally unique heraldic record.

The Stall Plates of the Knights of the Order of the Garter 1348-1485 was first published by W H St John Hope in 1901 and contains full-sized facsimiles of the 89 stall plates surviving from the period between the foundation of the Order in 1348 and the end of the reign of King Richard III in 1485.

This was an important period in the development of heraldry and many consider the late medieval period to be the epitome of heraldic art. Certainly some of the art work shown on the stall plates of this period has an amazing contemporary feel.
