History:
The Free Shipwrights received Ordinances in 1428 and the Foreign [Rotherhithe] Shipwrights a Charter in 1612, but a legal decision caused the latter's demise. In 1782 the present Company received its Livery, which, numbering 500, is restricted to persons with British maritime interests. Charitable and educational support is given to maritime objectives, including apprentices.

The former Hall stood in Ratcliff from the beginning of the 17th century to the end of the 18th century when it was destroyed.
