History:
Ordinances were formulated in 1373 and the Charter granted in 1617. Formerly, legal documents had to be written by Scriveners in Latin. The Company still has jurisdiction over London public notaries. Many of the present Livery of about 170 are connected with the legal profession. A charitable fund exists for members and their relatives.

The former Hall in Noble Street was occupied from 1631. It was destroyed in the Great Fire, rebuilt but sold in 1703 to the Coach and Harness Makers.
