History:
Perhaps following an Anglo-Saxon predecessor, the first Charter may have been granted in 1272, succeeded by incorporation in 1395. The Livery of nearly 100 retains close connections with saddlery. Prizes are given at the Cuty and Guilds of London Institute, Cordwainers' College, horse trials and show jumping. The City University and Alleyn's School are helped and pensions granted.

The first Hall in Foster Lane dated from the end of the 14th century. It was destroyed in 1666 and and rebuilt by 1670. That Hall was damaged by fire in 1815 and burnt out in 1821. Its successor was destroyed in 1941. The present Hall, designed by L Sylvester Sullivan, was opened in 1958 with a dining capacity of 150. It possesses a 1508 funeral pall and a 1619 ballot box.
