Received its first Charter in 1637. This working Company still tests and marks small arms gun barrels for public safety, having shared the task from the end of the 18th century with the Birmingham Proof House. Gunmakers are well represented on the Livery of nearly 150.

A Hall was built in 1872 alongside the Proof House in Whitechapel, which itself dates from 1757. This was the only Livery Hall outside the City but was sold in 1927. During the repair of war damage, a Court Room was incorporated in the Proof House in 1952.
