History:
A Fellowship was formed in 1356 which gained a Charter in 1674. An increasing proportion of the Livery of about 375 is connected with horses. Since 1891 examinations and registration of smiths have been organised, now supported by apprenticeships, to ensure the supply of competent farriers. Medals are awarded in shoeing competitions.
