Granted 18 March 1639 by Sir John Borough, Garter King of Arms.

History:
The Charter granted in 1638 was resisted by the City which eventually accepted enrolment in
1658, with powers to produce spirits, vinegar, etc., supervised by Sir Theodore de Mayerne,
a French Huguenot who had been physician to Charles I. The Livery of about 200 are mainly
distillers and wine merchants, and grant distilling scholarships.
