History:
The existing professional headquarters of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Moorgate Place
are used as the Company's Hall. The original Hall, designed by John Belcher, was built in 1890-93.
Belcher's partner, J J Joass, built an extension in 1930-31 as a continuation of the earlier
design. In 1959 William Whitfield was designed to design a further extension, including a
Great Hall. The new building was opened by the Queen in May 1970. In addition to the Council
Chamber, Guests' Room, Members' Room, reception rooms and committee rooms, there are a library
with over 26,000 books on accounting, law, finance and taxation and a restaurant. The collection of
modern silver, designed by Gerald Benney, comprises some 600 pieces.
